Treaty of Waitangi is a treaty between British government and Maori chiefs. It said that British would take over the the job of governing the northern part of New Zealand, and in return Maori would get to keep their lands and property, and they would have the rights and priviledges of British subjects. Then he should claim the South Island as British because Captain Cook from Britain had been the first to land there.
It was actually very unfair to Maori. But the British had guns and better powerful weapons, so Maori chiefs couldn't be against them although there were some chiefs who didn't agree with it.
